Erik & Hal Rosdahl
Swedish painter-turned-winemaker Erik Rosdahl created some of Spain's most profound and enigmatic wines in near secrecy from 2011 onward. Born in Paris, Erik pursued art across Europe and the US before retreating to the Philippines, where he lived in isolation for over 15 years. After relocating to Spain's Murcian plateau, he discovered ancient amphoras in his home's cellar and began winemaking as a creative outlet. Self-taught and deeply unconventional, Erik harvested grapes from neglected vineyards, working without machines, chemicals, or sulfites. Alongside his son Hal, they meticulously hand-pressed and bottled each vintage. Despite his disdain for the natural wine scene, his intensely concentrated wines, reminiscent of the Grand Vin of the old guard, gained recognition among sommeliers like Josep Roca. By 2022, losing access to vineyard parcels brought an end to Laboratorio Rupestre. Now back in Sweden, Erik continues to pursue his artistic ideals, leaving behind wines that are powerful, timeless, and deeply personal.
“I don't know, sometimes I get this idea, the liquid speaks of something similar, it takes you there, some place where you know less, maybe. And so, I guess I feel very attracted to whatever I don't know much about, and bored by a lot of what I must have already figured out.” - Erik Rosdahl (thoughts surrounding his final vintages in Spain)
